Muscular System Disorders and Electrical Muscular System Stimulation
Muscular system disorders can be very painful and agonizing for the people suffering from it. With the huge improvement in medical science and growing importance of physiotherapy, electronic devices are fast becoming the order of the day to counter such muscle disorders.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation or EMS
Electrical muscle stimulation or EMS that is also called the neuromuscular electrical stimulation or electromysostimulation in the medical circles is the process of treating the muscle contraction using electronic devices. Major functions of this device are –
• Elicits the muscle contractions using electrical stimulation;
• Impulses are generated using a device;
• These impulses are delivered using electrodes on skin in close proximity to the muscles that are stimulated;
• Impulses mimic all such action potential coming from the central nervous system that makes the muscle contract;
• Electrical muscle stimulation are physiotherapy combined with electrotherapy;
• United States Food and Drugs Administration or FDA regulates the EMS devices
Basic Requirements
EMS results in adaptation as well as the training of the muscle fibers. Multiple types of fibers are used for treatment of skeletal muscle or such other muscle contractions. Each of these types will cause a different sensation among others. Different programs are used for different purposes. Some are used to remove fatigue while other to increase endurance.
Use of EMS
EMS can be used for –
• Training of those who are in medical profession;
• Therapeutic tool;
• Rehabilitation purposes in medicine like preventing disuse muscle atrophy that can occur after musculoskeletal injuries;
• For prevention of damages to joints, bones, muscles, ligament, and tendons.
Use of EMS is different from use of electric shock treatments for pain therapy. However, it is also used for aesthetics goals by niche practitioners of medicine.
EMS – Not Meant for Weight Reduction
FDA has rejected claims that EMS can be used for weight reduction. Calorie burning with EMS at best is marginal. Calories can be significantly burned only with physical exercises and when multiple muscles are simultaneously engaged in physical activities. It involves the participation of heart and engagement of respiratory system as well.
EMS however, is often used in devices like the abs toning belts.
