Maria asks…
Student Health Insurance In Illinois ?
I am a graduate student in Chicago, and I have a low-income status. I need to find a student health insurance plan in Illinois. What options are available to me that won’t cause me to go broke while having it. Thanks for letting me know.
Chris Station answers:
Check with your college or student health center. They usually offer to can suggest who you could go with. Short of that , you might talk to an independent broker in your area who could find a policy that would cover you in case of serious accident or injury.

Donald asks…
What health insurance companies in Illinois offer maternity insurance?
I am not planning on becoming pregnant any time soon, but feel I should have it just in case. I want my monthly premiums to remain very low and I don’t mind having a higher deductible because of this. I know Blue Cross Blue Shield offers it, but all their plans are very expensive. Thanks!
I understand premiums will be expensive. I’m looking for the lowest possible premiums, or just insurance companies that offer maternity, because not all of them do. I can do my own research as well for lowest rates.
Chris Station answers:
Thanks to the Health Reform Act, insurance companies have pretty much stopped selling any kind of maternity insurance.
Now, for a small fee, you can still get the insurance discount. But, for example, the only “maternity” plan here in Texas, has a 90 day wait before conceiving, and a $5,000 deductible. Heck, my last C-Section, after the “insurance discount”, was under that much. So it’s not going to actually PAY.
Forget about which have the best maternity coverage. You’re going to have a darned hard time finding any, to offer ANY coverage. And those, will have a big, hefty deductible on them.
You’ll have to talk to an agent in IL to figure out IF anyone is still offering that coverage, and if not, what your other LOCAL options are. But plan on self paying it, because even when it WAS around, it would cost an extra $300 a month with a 12 month wait before conception – essentially, you’re self paying anyway ($300 x 21 months is $6300 paid in).

Donna asks…
When reach the age for medicare does my State of Illinois health insurance for state retired employes change?
Chris Station answers:
When you become eligible for Medicare, the two plans will coordinate benefits. This means that one plan will pay first (primary) and the other will pay secondary.
If you are retired from the State, Medicare will be the primary payer. You will need to tell your insurance company that you are picking up Medicare so they know to wait for Medicare to pay first.
Note that having two insurance companies does not guarantee that you will never have to pay a portion of your care. Watch your insurance company statements (EOBs) closely to determine if you have any liability.
