Your Questions About Health Insurance Plans With Maternity Coverage

James asks…

Health insurance with maternity coverage options?

I’m looking for health insurance that I can have for basic coverage, and at somepoint (if needed) add maternity coverage. Everything I have looked at so far will only cover pregnancy if it is elected from the very beginning (and before conception). The problem is – maternity coverage is expensive – an additional $200 or $300 a month. My husband and I have had difficult time getting pregnant, and the one time we did, it didn’t work out. The point is – I need coverage that is truely optional – add at any time – with no waiting period.

Has anyone had similiar issues? And what were your results?
Please don’t direct me to sites like www.insureme.com or www.eHealthinsurance.com I’ve looked at all of them and they don’t offer the specific plans I am searching for. Thank you!

Brad Selers answers:

Unfortunately you are seeking a plan of coverage that no insurer is likely to offer. Maternity related medical expenses can be huge and the only way an insurer will cover those costs is by spreading the costs over many non-pregnant policyholders.

Since some people choose to go without maternity coverage (due to expense or inability to have children for example) many insurers make such coverage optional. However they cannot allow you to add such coverage on little notice. It just doesn’t make business sense.

A few plans I have dealt with allow adding maternity coverage with at least one year’s elimination period – you have to pay the added premium for at least one year before any maternity coverage would go into effect. Ask an independent insurance broker for details about such plans.

Depending upon your income level you may be able to receive assistance with maternity expenses through a state medicaid plan. Qualifying income leves are different for pregnany women.

Richard asks…

What is the better option regarding health insurance. maternity rider or coverage with maternity covered & why

I’m trying to figure out if it’s better to have a plan with a maternity rider option or take a plan that already covers maternity. I found a plan that allows maternity rider to be added on later and the monthly premium is less per month. But regardless if it’s with a rider or no- the waiting period is still 12 months.

Which way is the best option? My husband and I aren’t planning for kids for another couple of years but want to be covered when the time is right.

Brad Selers answers:

Any maternity coverage with an individual plan is more of a pre-payment plan than insurance because the insurance company knows only people who are planning on becoming pregnant will get it. If you do the math with the waiting period and extra premium you’ll find that you’ll be better off paying cash for the delivery. You can save the extra premium money in a savings account or, if you have an HSA qualified plan, into the HSA account. Almost all individual policies will cover complications of pregnancy, such as a c-section, even if you don’t have maternity coverage so you’ll be protected on most plans.

Thomas asks…

I have individual health insurance with no maternity coverage. Will I be covered immediately with group?

I currently have an individual health insurance plan. I chose not to pay for maternity coverage. When my husband starts a new job next year, I will be on his group health insurance plan and will get maternity coverage. Here is my question… will there be a waiting period before I can get pregnant/receive maternity benefits after I get on his plan?
I know that if I added added maternity to my individual plan, I wouldn’t have maternity coverage for 9 months. I’m hoping it’s different with a group plan.
I’m hoping to be able to get pregnant shortly after I get on his plan so I’m hoping there’s no waiting period. I know all insurance companies are different, but if anyone can give me any insight on this, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Brad Selers answers:

It is different for each insurance plan, your husband will just have to ask his new job how their insurance plan works. There usually are probation periods when starting a new job. If it takes longer than you want to wait you can be covered through M.A. For everything related to pregnancy, no matter what your situation is or how much your household income is. A friend of mine was covered through M.A. During her pregnancy and she was really suprised to find out there are no limits to who they will cover. It was something that I was worried about for the future when my husband is no longer in the military and we won’t be covered through them anymore.
