Health Insurance Benefits Unemployed

Chris asks…
If an unemployed person (without health insurance) has an urgent medical conditon, what are their options?
Obviously most (if not all) of those greedy HMOs are going to deny benefits to anyone for the first six months after they take out a new insurance policy, because they’re going to argue that it was a pre-existing condition.
Could the person arrange for some kind of subsidies? This would be a reasonable thing to do, rather than applying for free care like all the illegals in this country do.
Chris Station answers:
You can go to the emergency room, tell the registration rep that you do NOT have insurance and you wish to apply for your state’s hospital assistance program that helps low income families pay their hospital bills. They will help you apply and you can get your bills paid in full. I used this program a few times when I was between jobs a few years ago. The program in NJ is called “Charity Care”. It’s a hospital assistance program. It is based on your income, assets and family size. When I say assets, I mean if you have a business, how much money you have in your bank account, if you receive child support, etc.
OR you can go to your state’s Board of Social Services office TOMORROW (or go on their website now) and apply for free health insurance. It goes to anyone who is low income or has NO income. In your case, you are unemployed so you are eligible. If you have kids, they are automatically eligible.
I am unemployed with 2 kids, my husband works and we still get free health insurance from the Board of Social Services. My state provided Medicaid temporarily until our free HMO kicked in after like 30 days. We don’t have any copays, no copays for doctors visits, dentists, or ER visits, free prescriptions, free eye glasses, etc. NJ has a great program.
Good luck. By the way there is NOTHING wrong with asking for help from the government. It becomes a problem when you refuse to get a job and purposely use the government for all free programs offered. I am not illegal and I get help. I lost my job in April and have been going to college full time ever since. Before the economy took a dive, I was making $50,000 a year with no college degree. I am now trying to educate myself and provide myself with more opportunities and job security. Because I am taking part in school while unemployed, I received grants to go to school, as well as extensions in unemployment, and help from the Board of Social Services. Please don’t discriminate and group all people who receive help into lazy ghetto people or immigrants. That is not true. I live in the suburbs, I am just having a rough time right now. There are millions of people unemployed right now. It’s the right thing for the government to temporarily help us out.
Good luck

Ruth asks…
Mandatory health care insurance for unemployed people / Good idea?
How much of a health care crisis did we have when most americans were employed?
How about more jobs in the U.S.?
Stop benefiting companies for taking our jobs out of the country?
Hershey’s Chocolate moves from Hershey, Pennsylvania to Mexico?
I won’t be handing out any Hersheys on Halloween-
Chris Station answers:
We’ve always had a health care crisis. It has only been inflated because a majority of Americans are out of work and cannot afford insurance.
I didn’t know Hershey moved to Mexico. Wow, sucks now I won’t dig there candy as much.
I guess that what’s next is that the politicians will move Washington DC to Mexico, Canada, or the Philippines.

Sandy asks…
Taking trip out of country – what happens to unemployment/COBRA health benefits?
I am currently unemployed and collecting unemployment, and am planning on traveling to Central America.
I know I cannot collect unemployment while I am gone (probably one-two months). My question is, can I start collecting when I get back or will I no longer be eligible? What about my health insurance through COBRA? Can I continue to pay it while I am gone, so I will still have health insurance when I return?
Chris Station answers:
It depends on your current situation, job status, qualification.. I heard that it differs slightly per eash state. I hink the best way is to call the unemployment office and find out exactly what the specific would be…

Companies With Good Health Benefits

Robert asks…
Is Comcast Cable a good company to work for? ?
Does it have good health benefits?
Does it have a 401K plan?
What is the starting salary for someone with experience?
Does it pay by the hour or commission?
How is holidays and sick pay?
Chris Station answers:
Its a great company to work for. My mom’s friend works for them. They just take forever or never to call. You have to have the experience they need. I applied over 5 times and never got a call…

Lizzie asks…
Why don’t companies list their medical benefits on their applications?
My friend needs a job that has great health benefits. It doesn’t have to pay well. When I go to the job sites like Walmart, Michaels, Office Max, Best Buy, etc I can’t find anything about the benefit packages they offer.
There would be no point in applying for a job if she can’t figure out a good solution to provide affordable health care to herself.
Getting married to someone with benefits so far hasn’t been an option LOL.
Chris Station answers:
Probably the best bet to find out would be finding someone (a friend of a friend) that works there and ask them. Most retail places won’t offer health care unless you work full time. Several years back I was looking and applied to a hospital and was impressed with what they offered. They offer benefits to part-timers and if you went with one of their doctors the monthly cost was $40 with no deductible. This is a well thought of hospital in my area. I was applying for an office job; there are lots of non-medical jobs in a hospital.

Mary asks…
Please explain McCain’s Health care tax credit.?
I am under the impression that you have one of 2 options assuming you have good employer health benefits:
1) Stick with your companies health insurance and you do not receive the credit and not much changes for you.
2) Choose not to receive health insurance from your company, your salary then increases by what your company paid for your health benefits, then you pay your own health insurance. Option 2 is when you see the tax credit.
Is that correct?
Please do not tell me who to vote for or what you think is better. I want a fact based break down of what this means. Thank You
Chris Station answers:
Here’s my understanding:
You don’t have the choice under your Option 1. But I believe your understanding under Option 2 is correct.
*edit to be more clear*:
there’s no opt-in to his plan. (so your Option 1 does not exist)
monies that were previously tax-exempt (i.e. Your employer-paid premiums) won’t be spent anymore, and therefore will increase your taxable income. Then you get the $2500 refundable tax credit (for an individual) to spend as you please.

Health Benefits For Small Companies

Richard asks…
Why are millions of small businesses personally calling Obama and thanking him for passing Health Care Reform?
More solid proff Obamacare is working.
The first statistics are coming in and, to the surprise of a great many, Obamacare might just be working to bring health care to working Americans precisely as promised.
The major health insurance companies around the country are reporting a significant increase in small businesses offering health care benefits to their employees.
Why?
Because the tax cut created in the new health care reform law providing small businesses with an incentive to give health benefits to employees is working.
We certainly did not expect to see this in this economy,” said Gary Claxton, who oversees an annual survey of employer health plans for the nonprofit Kaiser Family Foundation. “It’s surprising.”

Chris Station answers:
Health Care Reform is working and the cons are FROTHING!!!!
HHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Fewer people are dying and they hate it.

Steven asks…
Since Big Health Ins Companies lobby Washington heavily, do you think our Reps are really looking out for us?
or is Health Care Reform all about what will benefit Big Giant Health insurance companies? Is the Health Ins lobby all about closing down the small-time insurance providers, while gaining fat contracts for care through the government?
Chris Station answers:
I’m a bit suspicious of any health insurance plan big drug companies plan to spend $150 million to sell to us in ads, and where industry ads will be 5 to 1 in favor of the plan.
And if you read the bill, you will see why they will be happy, and you will not be happy.

Paul asks…
How should a group of employees at small business approach their Boss about a benefits package?
Nearly every employee at my small business (7 employees total + 1 President and 1 VP) – wants health benefits and a 401k plan. We’ve been promised these things, some as far back as 3-4 years ago. I’ve only been here for about 2 years and I was told when I was hired that they were working on getting a benefits package. Well, they’ve been in and out of accountants for the past year and a half. One quits, another starts and quits a couple months later. The President uses that as an excuse why we can’t get a package together – “We don’t have an experienced, reliable accountant to adminster everything involved, but when we do, it’ll be something I have them work on.” The painful thing is, they don’t seem to put the required effort into FINDING a dependable accountant. So, it’s an endless cycle. We all feel like quitting. We’re all hard workers and do a great job. Our company has grown profit-wise for 10 years straight. So how can we handle this?? Should we approach him as a group??
Chris Station answers:
You may want to consider having a spokesperson for the group ask for a meeting with the managers. Put together some questions/concerns that as a group you may have surrounding the issue of benefits. If you go in with a list of demands, it would only be counterproductive. You’ll need to go into the meeting actually WANTING to understand the reasons behind keeping benefits off the table for so long.
Ask questions that require explanations behind them, so that you get a better picture of what’s really going on, versus asking “yes or no” types of questions. Approaching them in that way gives you great strides in obtaining what you want. Good luck.

Health Insurance Comparisons
Health Insurance Comparisons
Article by Vernon
By doing your research and doing health insurance comparisons you can be assured that you are getting the best deal that is possible in the market.Medical inflation is rising dramatically today and employers are increasing the amount they expect workers to pay as they cope with health care costs. Families with two working spouses should compare coverage, co-pays and costs and choose the best mix that offers the best coverage for the least amount of money. Medical health insurance will depend on your way to getting the best insurance at an affordable cost. HMO health maintenance planMost people don’t bother getting health insurance comparisons and by doing so they are paying considerably more than they should be for their insurance policies.
Cheap Health Insurance , Is It For You?
Cheap health insurance is still available, it has not gone the way of the nickel soda or the 10 cent candy bar. As the cost of medical treatment continues to rise, finding cheap health insurance is becoming increasingly difficult. Cheap health insurance is an option for not having any health insurance at all. Choosing cheap health insurance is not something bad, but people have to understand they must go about it the right way.
Cost
Health insurance costs are rising all the time. The costs vary, so do plenty of research before choosing one or another. Many agents will work very hard to get you an affordable health insurance plan for your family at a cost you can live with. The rising cost of health care has made it so that even those with very limited budgets simply have to get some form of health insurance or they run the risk of encountering a large medical bill that can put their financial future in jeopardy. One good tactic to lower your monthly cost is to simply choose a plan with a higher deductible. A good scenario might cost you a couple hundred dollars but a bad scenario could ruin you financially and devastate your family. Check what they cover, deductibles, whether there are maximum payouts under any one category, whether they are for a family or individual health insurance, and of course the cost of the benefits which can vary a great deal. The cost of health insurance can vary greatly depending on the amount of coverage you need, if you were take all the options available in private health insurance then the premium would be astronomical and something which very few people can afford to do. Always check the policy because it might include things which you don’t need, for instance if you are a single man and a policy includes costs for pregnancy then this obviously won’t be needed. If you are considering the lowest cost health insurance then look into purchasing a policy that only covers major illnesses.
Part of the problem is the rising cost of medical care due to uninsured patients. Because of that, hospitals charge inflated rates to cover their own costs. Most low cost health insurance schemes provide for all basic medical and health related expenses, the difference lies in the type and extent of coverage that each of them provides. Low cost health insurance is for people whose annual income falls below a certain range. Health insurance costs depend on the health insurance rate and the range of coverage. Check the monthly cost and amount of deductibles charged and the extent of cost that they cover. There are several ways you can obtain affordable, low cost health insurance.
Search
The costs vary, so do plenty of research before choosing one or another. The best place to start your search for cheap health insurance providers is undoubtedly the internet. However, don’t be tempted to simply perform a search for ‘cheap health insurance’ as there is a high probability that almost all health insurance providers have this statement somewhere in their site’s text. See how cheap term life insurance really be by researching and comparing quote on-line from these top life insurance providers. Generally, health care can be exclusive, therefore if you are searching for a health insurance plan for your family unit, you have to look for plans that are both reasonably priced, and that would offer health coverage you require. Instead, take your time and do your research. With any Commendable Cheap-Health-Insurance plan, you need to read the Cheap-Health-Insurance terms of service of the Cheap-Health-Insurance account and search for any extra Cheap-Health-Insurance fees. As when looking at any health insurance policy, you ought to search for coverage that has a maximum payout of at least $1 million.
Conclusion
As the cost of medical treatment continues to rise, finding cheap health insurance is becoming increasingly difficult. The key to finding cheap Health insurance is knowing every option that is available, a process that can take a long time for an individual to complete. The key with health insurance and especially cheap health insurance is you need to know where health insurance is.

Ruth asks…
Should the United States provide free health care for all people?
We Americans have a health care system but there are some who live without an expensive health insurance. Right now, health insurance is paid by various companies. Elsewhere in the world, in countries such as Canada, Cuba, England, and most of Europe, there is universal health care for all people.
I have a series of questions here: Why is it that some countries have free health care? Should the United States provide free health care for all people? If so, then what should we, or the government, do to give health benefits to all?
Chris Station answers:
Nothing is free. Universal health care would be paid for with higher taxes. Our current system is paid for with deductions from your pay check or you buy it privately like any other type of insurance. Either way you are paying for it.

Daniel asks…
With the the US health care system in so much trouble is it time to go to Canada, Australia?
No Kidding. I know if we have a good job many of us get half-way decent health care in the US. But wow. In today’s environment who can ensure that the company they go to work for today will be around tomorrow. How does one emmigrate to other countries from the US? Is it difficult? Are there enough benefits of living in Canada or Australia that make that a more desirable location. I just read statistics where in the US only 15% percent of the folks are happy with the health care and 25% In England. Not great numbers for England but better than the US. I am trying to think outside the box!
Chris Station answers:
I feel your pain…I retired to Canada (partially for that reason) a number of years ago and was quite pleased with the health care……a family doctor in Canada is very versatile and can treat a number of ailments including minor outpatient surgery in his/her office…other side of the coin..if you have to go into a hospital, more often than not, unless it is a life or death emergency, you will face a lengthy (several months) wait….now, there IS more to the story….I was able to do this, because at the time, I was married to a Canadian citizen…after a minimum of paper work I was granted health care priviledges…what you would have to do as a non-Canadian citizen to be granted residence in Canada, I’m not sure………and of course, in this world there is no free lunch, income taxes were considerably higher; and there is/was a modest monthly cost for health care premiums….this was in 1998….if there have been changes since that time, I am not aware of them………..also, I mentioned that was only one of the reasons I moved to Canada…I was living in Victoria, Vancouver Island and it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth..the Canadians are great people…ALSO, the U.S. Dollar was was about 30 to 40% higher than the Canadian $…..not so now; and it’s dropping….so, you’ve much to consider……good luck!!

Health Insurance Benefits For Employees Questions Answered

Donna asks…
Is it lawful for Obama to tax health insurance benefits unless employees are union?
Seem to me that Obama is paying back the Unions for GM
Correct, but it is still a benefit and has a monetary value. There are many other union benfits that cost companies a fortune.
Brad Selers answers:
Unions’ Health Benefits May Avoid Tax Under Obama Proposal
http://bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601070&sid=aDvu77pZr7k4
There’s a reason the Obama health care plan is being rushed through Congress this summer — because the American people would likely never support it if given time to absorb and understand such fine print,” as the unions being exempt from any tax increase on any health care benefits provided by their boss. “If the union carve-out isn’t sufficient to excite public anger, wait till you hear about the version of the Obama plan prepared by Senator Edward Kennedy, which would specifically exempt Members of Congress from many of its provisions. As the US Office of Personnel Management notes, Members of Congress ‘enjoy the widest selection of health plans in the country.’ According to page 114 of the Kennedy bill, a similar array of choices would not be available to other Americans in the future. Instead, they would be shunted into health insurance plans under the straightjacket of whatever the government decides is a ‘basic’ plan.”
Union workers would be exempt from the Democrat health care tax. So guess what that says to people? Hey, buddy, if you join our union, your health care won’t be taxed like everybody else’s. “Critics of the Baucus proposal to exempt unions from a health care benefits tax said the exclusion could be used to lure into unions employees who are anxious to avoid the benefits tax.” Yes, exactly right. So you continue to throw a bone to the unions of the workers’ paradise. Obama is right out of Das Kapital? Obama looks at profit as just surplus revenue that he can grab. The private sector is just an endless pile of money. He can go get it, use it for whatever he wants. I have also said that if you want to understand Obama’s economic policy, understand just one thing, and that is he considers his mission to be to return the nation’s wealth to its, quote, unquote, rightful owners.
Now, if you’re familiar with Marx and Das Kapital, the rightful owners of the nation’s wealth are the poor and workers, the middle class who are exploited and used and taken advantage of and on whose backs other people get rich. Profit is considered evil. Profit is considered something that’s unequal. It’s unfair to have a profit and to make one.
Look where Unions got G.M. Labor unions are disastrous for American car companies. Labor unions, along with the government regulations, will destroy this country’s free capitalism, or what is left of free capitalism. When you restrict what a company can do, and couple that with labor unions demanding outrageous amounts of money for little to no work, you get a bankrupt business. When you bite the hand that feeds you enough, you stop getting fed!

Mark asks…
How does the health care reform bill affect health benefits for employees/employers?
Specifically, I’d like to know if it will be in an employers interest to continue to provide health insurance benefits to employees, once the effects of the bill kick in years from now.
Brad Selers answers:
EMPLOYER COVERAGE People who receive coverage through large employers would be unlikely to see any drastic changes, nor should premiums or coverage be affected. But almost everyone would benefit from new regulations, like the ban on pre-existing conditions that would apply to all policies come 2014.
There might even be cases where people would be eligible to buy insurance through an exchange instead of through their employer, Professor Jost said: those who must pay more than 9.5 percent of their income for premiums, or those whose plans do not cover more than 60 percent of the cost their benefits.

Robert asks…
What are some good options for providing health insurance and other benefits to my employees?
I have 6 employees and need some info on 3rd party services who can manage benefits.
Brad Selers answers:
A lot of employers offer AFLAC or some kind of insurance that is simple to manage. In some cases it could be cheaper to just reimburse employees for a percentage of their own out of pocket insurance premiums. If a single male employee gets insurance for $700 a month you could offer to pay for 75% of the premium through his paycheck or a year end health reimbursement.

Health Benefits Companies Canada Questions Answered

Robert asks…
Does anyone know how long it takes to get health benefits in Frace or Canada?
We have kids with a genetic disease and it has wiped us out. We love America but as we look to the future for our kids, we see their lives being even more difficult. We can see that Health care reform is going no where here and with their particular disease, both France and Canada would be good places. We are aware, we won’t be so welcomed but wonder if anyone knows the in and outs of this or know of any American companies that are hiring in other countries. Maybe someone can tell us the best way to find this information out? Thanks
Brad Selers answers:
You have to be a citizen (or permanent resident) for a year before medical benefits kick in but in order to get to that status, you have to apply for immigration. Your best bet is to check with Immigration Canada and see if you are even eligible.

Helen asks…
How different is it to get approval from Health Canada vs the FDA for drugs and medical devices?
I am interested in learning more about the approval process for drugs and medical devices in Canada vs the USA. New and emerging companies would benefit from this.
Brad Selers answers:
In Canada, everything has to go through a rigorous testing process before it can be released to the public, but you can get generic versions of drugs much sooner than in the USA; I think it’s twenty years after proprietary version is released.

Carol asks…
How would you refute these 9 points on the advantages of America adopting a health plan more like Canada`s?
1. All Americans would have health insurance. This is the right thing to do because it reflects and promotes core values and notions of citizenship: equality, compassion, and social solidarity. Sickness doesn’t discriminate. Neither should health care.
2. Health would improve. On almost every critical measure (life expectancy, infant mortality, etc.), Canada rates higher than the U.S., and we’re among the best in the world.
3. It would cost less. Canada spends 9.8% of GDP on health care, while the U.S. spends more than 15%. A single-payer system is the less expensive way to go.
4. Patients would have more choice. In Canada, patients can choose whatever doctor, specialist, and hospital they want. Treatment decisions are left to patients and their doctors. No insurance companies meddle in our choices.
5. Quality of service would improve. In Canada, health providers never have to choose between their wealth and a patient’s health. Our system forbids that choice. The vast majority of Canadians are highly satisfied with the quality of care they receive. In Canada, patients rarely sue physicians.
6. It would reduce the bureaucracy. Patients in Canada show their health card and get care. Health providers bill the government directly and get paid. It’s that simple.
7. Fewer Americans would go bankrupt because of health-care costs. This is a major problem for many U.S. families. It rarely happens in Canada.
8. It would benefit business. Companies in Canada have a competitive advantage because they don’t have to provide basic health-care coverage for their workers.
9. It would diminish labor strife. Health care is incidental in labor negotiations in Canada. It’s a large and growing pitfall in contract negotiations in the U.S.
Your false = head in sand
yawn= I have no fricking idea how to answer
From the Frasier Institute (a couple of years old but not much has changed)
Numbers of people waiting: The numbers of people waiting for each procedure and
therefore each specialty were also calculated.
Throughout Canada, the total number of people waiting
for treatment was 166,150 in 2005, a reduction of
22 percent between 1998 and 2003. The number of
people waiting rose in Saskatchewan, Newfoundland,
and Prince Edward Island. As a percentage of the population,
0.54 percent of Canadians were waiting for
treatment in 2005, which varied from a low of 0.36 percent
in Ontario to a high of 2.23 percent in Saskatchewan
O`Reilly wouldn`t be trying to be a bit biased now would he?
Gitmo…your stats are false, no doubt in my mind.
Brad Selers answers:
Thanks, you’ve asked an easy question.
Here is a recent interview with Dr. Brian Day, a former president of the Canadian Medical Association, along with the transcript. To put it mildly, their health care system is in big trouble and it’s the citizens who are suffering.
Edit:
Here’s a recent link straight out of a Canadian news paper. Read it and decide for yourself if you think the questions asked by O’Reilly were slanted. Facts are facts and these are Doctors crying out about a system that is not working! So you can continue on and remain blind… Your choice. I’m not giving up my private insurance for the mess they have.
O’REILLY: Doctor, What would you say is the biggest problem with your health care system in Canada?
DR. BRIAN DAY: Well, the biggest problem is access & by access I mean we have 5,000,000. In the Canadian system, the first line of defense is the primary care physician & in a population of 33,000,000 people, 5,000,000 people don’t have a primary care physician.
O’REILLY: Alright, so you don’t have enough doctors. Is that because doctors don’t get paid as well as doctors in the United States? Per 100,000, you’re down 30% from where we are. We have 30% more doctors than you have. Is that because you don’t pay your doctors as well?
DAY: No, We rank 26th out of 28 of the developed countries in number of doctors per population. It’s part of the mechanism of rationing that has to happen when you promise to deliver everything & you don’t have enough doctors to provide everything.
O’REILLY: Ok so you have enough doctors but you have too many cases, too many illnesses to treat so people get on a line & they have to wait. Is it…Is that a major problem in Canada? Are people suffering because they can’t get in to see a doctor?
DAY: Oh yes. We have over 1,000,000 people waiting for surgery & we probably have another 1,000,000 people waiting to see a specialist so they join the other 1,000,000 people waiting for surgery. And that’s for a population of approximately 34,000,000.
O’REILLY: President Obama says that if we pass this bill, health care costs will go down in the United States. You’re saying that in Canada, they have skyrocketed. Does it seem plausible to you that if Obamacare gets passed, our costs will come down?
DAY: I don’t think so because in Canada’s system, we were just rated on a value for money basis by a European organization that rates all of the European companies & alongside the 29 European countries, Canada came in bottom in value.

Health Benefits Companies In Alabama Questions Answered

Richard asks…
Please tell me if I correctly understand the Republican philosophy concerning “for profit” health care?
Please consider this real life situation and explain not only the ideological but the moral aspects of your defense of our current health system.
Please note that this question has nothing to do with people getting “free” or “government” health care at your expense but with the structure of the “free market” health care system and it’s implications for ordinary Americans.
My father owned a small printing company in Alabama, employing about 25 people and most of the equipment was paid for as well as the building. This has been a family business, the American dream, since 1923.
My father’s health began to fail a while back and his doctor advised that he retire from the business which he did. My brother agreed to move to Alabama and run the company.
My brother had an individual Blue Cross policy in the state of Georgia where he was living before the move to run Dad’s company. My brother had had cancer some time back but was in remission and felt good about his health and the move.
But, of course, as soon as he changed his address from a Georgia address to the Alabama address, Blue Cross cancelled him.
No problem. He just called Blue Cross in Alabama to purchase coverage but was told that Blue Cross is incorporated in such a way that their policies are not transferable across state lines.
They gave him the choice of purchasing another policy or adding him to the group at the printing company but either way, they were calling the cancer a pre-existing condtion and imposed a one year waiting period.
Unfortuately, Dad had transferred his stock in the printing company to my brother in case dad passed away and this would avoid probate and other legal problems. We thought,
But then the real trouble started. Before the one year waiting period that Blue Cross imposed, my brother’s cancer returned with a vengence, hospitalizing him and requiring extensive and expensive treatment. The doctor and hospital bills soon ran into multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars, overwhelming his ability to pay.
His medications alone were costing over $3,000.00 per month.
Dad pleaded with me to come back and run the company since neither he or my brother could. I did but it was too late.
Since Dad had transferred his majority stock to brother, the doctors and hospital sued and obtained judgements against my brother, seizing the company stock and laying claim to the printing presses, the building and the company’s operating capital.
I watched in horror as my family’s business which was founded in 1923 was auctioned off for pennies on the dollar to partially satisfy a debt to some doctor’s and a hospital.
Had the law suits that destroyed the business been due to negligence on the company’s part such as an uninsured delivery van, then we would have deserved this.
But this was a case where we tried to purchase insurance for my brother and could not do so due to an insurance company’s clever lawyers preventing us from transferring coverage. And then the doctors, hoospitals and drug companies charging so much they almost no one could pay.
This is but one serious issue with our health care system that plagues those of us who try to live the American dream of an “ownership” society, pay our own way and create jobs for others and to benefit our community.
I would appreciate if some of you “conservatives” can explain to me how and why we should allow our health care system to continue to operate in such an insane and immoral manner and destroy the lives and fortunes of people who have tried to do nothing more than to play by the rules and to contribute to our community.
PS My family moved to this country from Europe in the early 1900′s to persue the American dream and find freedom from social and economic injustice.
Brad Selers answers:
The problem isn’t with the insurance companies.
The problem is the high cost of health care that makes it impossible to get quality care without going broke.
Obama’s current plan to *require* all Americans to purchase insurance and to disallow insurance companies to refuse clients is intended to break the insurance companies. Obama’s plan will cripple them and then we will all be in hot water without a way out.
The root of the high cost is the way drugs and medical devices are patented. Whoever gets the patent can charge whatever they please, and they do.
IMHO, the best thing that Obama could do is change the patent system and if an invention (drug or medical device) is one that serves humanity, it does NOT receive a patent! Period.

Ken asks…
I recently found out one of my former employers is saying I was fired, but I quit. Is there anything I can do
I used to work for a 3rd party call center that has contracts to take calls for other companies. When the company I took calls for bought out their contract, I was given the option of working directly for that company or being transferred to a different department. I took the first option because it meant better pay and health benefits (not being offered by the 3rd party call center).
During a recent job search, I found out that the 3rd party call center is telling prospective employers that I was fired. Even though I have been able to prove that I wasn’t, they have refused to correct their records.
They are making me look like I’m lying on applications I’ve handed in, and I have been turned down for two jobs because of it. Is there anything that I can do?
I live in Alabama, which is an “at will” state.
Brad Selers answers:
You can try contacting the state Labor Department to see if they have any options. Another possibility would be to pay a lawyer to send them a cease-and-desist letter — the threat of civil action might shut them up.

Donald asks…
Which job would you choose?
I work for company for 2 and a half years and now make 13.11 an hour (which btw is very good in alabama)…. I have excellent benefits and health/dental insurance. I have a husband and two sons on my insurance along with life insurance for all of us. I was offered a job delivering mail with usps for 17.51/hr but there is no insurance. I would make more money, but……. i dont know.. My husband could maybe get insurance at his job but it would cost alot more a month.
what would you do?
Brad Selers answers:
If ya got kids, ya gotta have insurance. The extra money you make at the postal job would be enough to pay for insurrance. It kinda evens out The bottom line on any job is finding one you like, because even if yer making more money, and yer misserable…whats the point?
