Health Insurance Comparisons

Robert asks…

How to get health insurance for senior age parents who have greencard status?

My mother-in-law is in her 70s and in fairly good health, but the problem is her insurance. She never worked in this country, and will not be eligible for medicare/medical/medicaid for 5 years (due to green card/residency issues). She currently is a member of Kaiser, but due to her age is considered a ”high risk” patient, and her monthly premium has now gone up to $700 per month. This gives her basic Kaiser care, with co-pays for visits and prescriptions. After consulting a healthcare advocacy group who does comparisons of plans for people, their suggestion was to drop her healthcare completely and save the money. I feel this would be disastrous if something really bad were to happen to her (accident, etc.) and would like to try to present her with other options. Does anyone know of a group that is accepting members for health insurance that has good rates? (any group of people large enough can get a group plan through major insurers) Any advice welcome!

Chris Station answers:

I don’t have an answer directly, but I have noticed that AARP is forever sending me information that includes insurance. Since it is a membership organization, they can get group plans that make things pretty reasonable. It’s at least a start in your research.

There may also be long-term plans that need to be looked into specifically, but if your real problem is covering the next five years, you need to have some idea of what she can expect to do when she is eligible for Medicare, and look for an insurance company that knows how to interact seamlessly (do the paperwork for you) to collect your benefits most efficiently. The modern thing is you have one card, and they can change things around in the computer according to what you need. You don’t need to keep shopping around.

If she’s generally healthy now, and has the good sense to take care of herself reasonably, she really has to figure on getting three digits together in some reasonable comfort. By the time she gets there, it will have become relatively common. Our old age statistics are going to show even more amazing improvements in the next ten years or so, as the medical improvements made for the benefit of aging Baby Boomers has its first and most dramatic effect on people who are already older, but healthy.

Mandy asks…

People like to refute a comparison of the requirement to buy car insurance with the health insurance mandate?

by saying that people choose to own a car. If you don’t have the car then you don’t need the insurance.

Just how, exactly, are people able to choose to not have a body – something that can and will need medical care, often through no fault of the “owner”? Yes, people can choose to keep themselves in better health by eating right and exercise, but there are also illnesses that people are born with or that just happen.

Can you explain how people can choose not to have a body without committing suicide?

Chris Station answers:

“…but there are also illnesses that people are born with or that just happen. ”

And BEFORE you could NOT get insurance if you were such a person. So you would suffer unnecessarily with a treatable illness… Then go to the E.R. When the condition threatened your LIFE.

This uninsured visit costs the REST OF US…. Something between $20K and $250K.

Now if that person HAD insurance…. And the insurance company COULD NOT refuse him for having such a condition. Then the Insurance company MUST do what they CLAIM they have been doing.

That is…. Collecting premiums on a large group to spread the risk that ONE of them will get sick and spread the COST if and when they do.

Up until today… The insurance companies have the best of both worlds…. Collect premiums from the LARGE group….. KICK OUT of the group anyone who actually needs the services that they have been PAYING FOR for years prior.

What this bill does… Is FORCE insurance companies to ACTUALLY provide insurance. That is all.

P.S. You can opt out…and pay a fine… Or keep your CURRENT insurance and NOTHING changes for you. So what IS your problem?

William asks…

Should health insurance just be banned period?

I obviously don’t mean all health insurance. I think that health insurance reform could be done by completely doing away with insurance having to pay for a $30 yearly check-up or an $8 bottle of generic brand medicine.

Let me do a quick comparison: Health insurance now, is like car insurance paying for your gas, oil changes, tires, etc. Not just major damages to your car.

Health insurance should be the same. It should only cover catastrophic illnesses and accidents.

Since these aren’t as common as the common cold, it’d be cheaper and the insurance companies would have less payouts, and more people could afford it.

The high prices that doctors charge for regular visits, and the price of medicine would likely come down as well, since people would only buy what they can afford, it would encourage competition.

This is just the surface of some ideas I’ve got. What do you think?

Chris Station answers:

Insurance is in general is a ripoff. Health INSURANCE is no exception. Insurance goes something like this….YOU pay company X dollars a month….then hope you dont come down with an illness so lets say $100/mo(unrealistsic, but just to use a round figure) and you have it for 10 months you just spent $1000 then you go to doctor and your insurance covers the $120 visit and you are happy not remembering that you just payed $1000 for the visit. They try to get you on the back end.

In general if you have the self-discipline put money away for medical and be your own insurance. Then if you have a serious illness insurance companies(despite what they say) will have specialists review your claim and try to find a way out of paying and leave you to foot the bill. That is these peoples jobs to find a way to “weasel” out of paying. They run a business not a charity so all they care about id the BOTTOM LINE(MONEY).

Could I Benefit From A Short Term Health Insurance Plan?

Who Needs Short-term Health Insurance?

Because people never know when some form of health insurance might be necessary, it is always a good idea to take the steps necessary to make sure that some form of it is readily available. Everyone knows that accidents happen all the time. The smartest thing to do is to be fully prepared for them when they do occur. In addition, many people go through the majority of their life in relatively good health, thus allowing them to assume that their good health will last forever. Regardless of one’s health history, though, a major illness or debilitating injury is always possible.

In the case that a person is stricken with something unexpected, it is always much better to use the time after a major illness or accident to focus on getting better. People often use much of their strength and emotional energy worrying about impromptu medical costs when they should be focused on doing what they need to do to get themselves healthy again. A major cause of stress after an illness or accident is a lack of a clear answer as to how an untimely medical bill is going to be paid. This uncertainty as to when a medical crisis might arrive and what will happen immediately following is reason enough to make sure that one is protected at all times. Short-term health insurance is becoming an increasingly popular option for people who happen to find themselves without insurance for a brief amount of time. So, the question becomes: “Who exactly might need this type of health insurance, and what might they be entitled to?”

The hundreds of thousands of people in the United States and Canada who suddenly find themselves having to deal with a change in status in regard to their job or their schooling are the ones who are encouraged to apply for short-term health insurance. Within the workforce, part-time and temporary employees are the most likely consumers of short-term health insurance. This is due mainly to the fact that many businesses do not make it a policy of theirs to cover part-time employees or those who were recently unemployed.

People who happen to be between jobs make up a large percentage of those who purchase short-term health insurance. Short-term insurance companies have made it very clear that they will gladly accept individuals who are temporarily out of work. This is good news for these workers, because most of the other insurance markets do not welcome those who find themselves unemployed with such open arms.

Since the establishment of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA), people who have recently been fired or who have lost their job for one reason or another are allowed to hold on to their previous employer’s insurance for up to 36 months. Of course, this depends upon the circumstances. Most of the time, though, those people who are unemployed will be able to use COBRA to protect themselves until a new employer’s plan kicks in. While COBRA sounds like an appealing option, it is usually the least favorite for those who do not currently have health insurance. This is due to the extremely high cost of the premium. Companies must be compensated for their willingness to continue an ex-employee’s health insurance, and charging a high price for a premium is one way to make sure that happens. If COBRA premiums are too high for someone’s budget, a short-term health insurance policy with considerably lower premiums might be the solution. In fact, due to the increasingly competitive nature of the health insurance industry, one is likely to find a monthly premium that actually costs less than a car payment.

Another group of consumers who are beginning to make very good use of short-term health insurance plans are those who have recently graduated from college. Many graduates hunt for jobs that will offer health insurance benefits. Most of them are usually successful, but there is still a brief amount of time in between graduation and when the health insurance kicks in. Theirs is the perfect example of a situation which requires temporary coverage.

Young people who are about to lose their dependent status under their parents’ health coverage are now beginning to find comfort in short-term health insurance plans. Many young people who reach the age of 18 are not planning on going to post-secondary school. If they turn 18, and have not yet enrolled themselves as a full-time student, they will be excluded from their parents’ health insurance policy. If this situation occurs, the young person will be eligible for COBRA. However, the premiums may be way too high for someone who is just coming out of high school and who has yet to line up a steady job. A short-term health insurance policy is much more feasible in this situation. The young person can be insured for a while, or at least until he or she finds a job that offers health insurance, or until they enroll in an individual health plan.

The final group of people who are making the move to short-term health insurance are those who are temporarily without coverage for some other reason than the ones already mentioned. For example, if a worker is on strike from his company, he or she may try to get coverage. Or, if someone has recently been discharged from the military, they most likely will be able to obtain short-term insurance.

Because of its tendency to offer both low monthly costs and high coverage limits, sales of short-term health insurance plans have skyrocketed in recent years. Those who run the business of short-term insurance can now boast of the shortest application in the health insurance industry. In addition, many insurers now offer credit card payment plans which make the whole process that much easier and stress-free.

Due to the fact that it offers low costs, high coverage amounts, and a fast purchase process, short-term health insurance serves an important function for people who are in dire need of medical coverage. Those who find themselves suddenly without a job or who have recently graduated from college are now able to take comfort in the fact that they too will be able to receive a limited form of medical coverage in the event that a medical situation arises. Thanks to the many benefits of short-term health insurance, these people, as well as others, now find themselves adequately protected in times of emergency.

Traveling Alternative Roads: Other Options for Health Care

Health insurance can be expensive if you are not lucky enough to have it provided by your employer. Even shopping around for the best quotes may not be within your budget. Luckily there are alternatives to health insurance that you can take advantage of so that you and your family will be safe even if an emergency situation comes up. You can apply for the prescription discount card program, which is a low monthly cost and works at most of the of corporation drug stores that we all use. There are also programs that give you health care but are not considered “health insurance”.

The prescription discount card is great for anyone who has regular prescriptions that need to be filled over a long period of time. The cost of prescriptions without insurance is high and always rising. If you cannot afford health insurance, there is no way that buying these full priced prescriptions will come without difficulty. You can enroll in a discount card program on the Internet or you can call around to try and find one locally. The reported savings for each person is estimated to be at least 50%, and some programs will enroll you for under $5 a month.

Health care programs are another popular alternative to expensive health insurance. BeniCard, for example, is a highly acclaimed health care program, and for a small monthly fee, you can have your immediate family covered. You will not be turned down because there is no limit to who is eligible, even if you have a pre-existing condition. It is not health insurance, but you will be able to save money on doctor visits, vision and hearing care, dental services, and prescription drugs. This is just one of the programs that can help you if you cannot get health insurance due to expense or because you have been turned down due to an illness.

No one should go without health care of some sort. Prescriptions are extremely costly without insurance, and if you or someone in your family has an emergency health situation, you could be left with a large debt for years. Insurance companies are hesitant to accept anyone with a pre-existing illness because it will definitely cost them plenty of money. For anyone who has been turned down for health insurance or simply cannot afford to pay a deductible, health care programs and prescription discounts are a low-cost alternative that could save you money.

Why Health Insurance?

The term health insurance (popularly known as Medical Insurance or Mediclaim) is a type of insurance that covers your medical expenses. The concept of health insurance is new in India but its awareness is growing fast. Health insurance comes in handy in case of severe emergencies. Life is unpredictable, insurance can make it safe and secure from bearing huge financial loss. A health insurance policy is a contract between an insurance company and an individual. Sometimes it is associated with covering disability and custodial needs. The contract is renewable annually.

Health insurance is affordable and carries the assurance and freedom from insecurities that threaten normalcy now and then. The type and amount of health care costs that will be covered by the health plan are specified in advance. Health plans are available in two formats, individual and group plans. In an individual policy you are personally the owner of the policy. While in a group plan, the sponsor owns the policy and the people covered under it are called its members.

Medical expenses are sky high these days. An appointment with a doctor might churn out big bucks. The elaborate medical treatment expenses could eat into your savings meant for the future. Health insurance policy kicks in to ensure that you get the required treatment and your pocket is still under control. Having health insurance is important because the coverage helps people get timely medical care and improve lives and health. It covers the risk of financial difficulties in the event of long illness. The awareness has been enormous in the last couple of years. This must have been in response to the series of uncertainties people have observed in recent times like the terror attacks.

Types of Health Insurance
Health care costs have seen a phenomenal rise in the recent times. This has led the customers to insure not only themselves but their family members also. It will cover future medical expenses and other related requirements if it ever arises. The need to insure has gained more importance amongst older generation who is either retired or will retire in the near future. Let us discuss the types of medical insurances available in the market.

Medical Insurance
This is typically a hospitalization cover and reimbursement of the medical expenses incurred in respect of covered disease or surgery while the insured was admitted in the hospital as a patient. Different types of medical insurances are available in the market like individual medical insurance, group medical insurance and overseas medical insurance. There are health policies that reimburse you the actual hospitalization cost for treatment of any disease and are offered by the non-life insurers only. These policies are popularly called “Mediclaim” policies. Other types of health insurances are provided by both the life and non-life insurers.

Critical Illness Insurance
Critical Illness plan insures you against the risk of serious illnesses in return of a premium you are required to pay. This gives you the same security of knowing that a guaranteed cash sum will be paid if the unexpected happens and you are diagnosed with any one of the critical illness. Sometimes a critical illness can change your lifestyle in addition to help within the home or the family. In this type of health insurance plan, the insured receives a lump sum amount within a few days of diagnosing critical illness. Once this lump sum is paid, the plan ceases to remain in force. Typically, a critical illness plan would provide cover for the illnesses mentioned below.

Health Insurance When Living Abroad

You may not know this already, but when planning on traveling abroad you cannot take your local insurance with you. You will need to purchase an international insurance plan offered by a multinational insurance company. While they may be hard to track down, it is the best way to assure that in the event of an accident or illness you will be able to acquire medical attention if needed.

Many of these plans will cover you up to six months in another country. When you speak with the insurance company, be prepared to give an extensive list of information to them. This will range from health problems you’ve had in the past ten years, your hereditary conditions to substance abuse, and almost everything else-if it has anything to do with your health be prepared to disclose the information. If you are planning on traveling with more than one family member, then be prepared to give information for each family member as well.

Many times your basic coverage will include emergency treatment regardless of which facility it is administered. This is not the case with minor medical treatment. It is important to know whether you are buying an insurance plan that is an HMO or PPO. If you are under an HMO or health maintenance organization, then you will be limited to receiving care from only the providers who are in their network.

You can retrieve a list of all the companies within your insurer’s network upon request.  If you are under a PPO, or preferred provider organization, you will have the opportunity to pick the best facility you see fit, but your insurer will only cover a portion of the incurred cost.

If you plan on staying abroad for more than six months then you will need to look into what is called expatriate health insurance. Only larger companies supply this type of insurance, as it is much more extensive with the type of options that can be applied to each policy.

The type of treatment options that are covered with expatriate health insurance are those that are labeled as specialty treatments, like chiropractic therapy and acupuncture. There are many options that can be applied to expatriate health insurance depending on your family’s needs and how long you plan on spending abroad.

There are many options for health insurance when you are traveling abroad. While many individuals never consider purchasing insurance when traveling to another country, this should be at the top of your list when planning for a trip. Health insurance should not be taken lightly. Be sure you understand every aspect of your policy before deciding with any one particular company.
